Chitralekha Odissi Dance Creations (CODC) presents ³Karna², the third installment of the Mahabharata Quadrilogy, a four-part epic series by Toronto area dance and music master Guru Sri Devraj Patnaik. Each of the four episodes views the legendary story of the Mahabharata from the point of view of the life tale of one of the four most prominent heroes. The second installment in the series, ³Drona² premiered last fall to packed houses, and glowing reviews -- being described as, ³Šan all-consuming and powerful evening of dance and theatre.² (the dance current, October 2004).
The ³Mahabharata² is one of the landmark works of India, simultaneously an achievement of literature, philosophy, and devotion. Guru Sri Devraj Patnaik¹s creation, based on the version by the 15th century Oriya poet Sarala Das, differs from every other traditional East Indian Dance ever staged. From the intensity and passion of the choreography, to the complexity of the stage set, and the unique integration of special effects lighting technology that is designed to convey the timeless spiritual significance behind the story, each of the four performances is a feast for the senses...and the soul.
This year¹s episode, ³Karna², relates the epic life of the immaculate son of the god Surya. Abandoned in infancy by his mother, raised in the household of a charioteer, later crowned King of Anga by Duryodhan, Karna is a tragic hero, plagued on all sides by misfortune and deceit, compelled by oath and duty to prosecute an unrighteous war against his brothers, but nonetheless of virtuous conduct.
²Karna² will feature Devraj Patnaik in the title role, actress Ellora Patnaik (³My Own Country², ³Tapish²) as the almighty Krishna, Prithula Prosun as Kunti and guest artists from India Bijay Kumar Sahoo and Lingaraj Pradhan respectively as Arjun and Yudhistir.
