Dalai Lama arrives in France, not to meet Sarkozy
PARIS: The Dalai Lama arrived in France, a member of his entourage said, ahead of a high-profile 12-day visit during which the Tibetan spiritual guide abandoned plans to meet President Nicolas Sarkozy. The Nobel peace laureate was welcomed by religious leaders at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport at around 0400 GMT (0930 hours IST) after arriving from New Delhi. Officially, his visit begins with the blessing of a Vietnamese Buddhist temple in Evry, south of Paris.[  more  ]

Karzai urges world to target militants in Pakistan
KABUL: Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai urged the world to target the Taliban in Pakistan, adding that operations by foreign troops in his country had only led to civilian deaths among Afghans and not success in the war. Afghanistan and Pakistan are both important US allies but ties between the two neighbours have for decades been dogged by a border dispute. Recently, Kabul openly accused Pakistan of involvement in violence in Afghanistan, where the Taliban and al-Qaida militants routinely attack foreign and Afghan forces. [  more  ]
